N.J. weather: When will snow start falling? - NJ.com

The long-duration winter storm expected to blanket a large chunk of the state with a foot or more of snow is underway with light snow already moving into western New Jersey before 10 a.m

The main batch of precipitation, though, will start in the southern most parts of New Jersey around noon and push north through the afternoon, according to Michael Priante, a meteorologist with WeatherWorks, a private weather forecasting company in Hackettstown.

While there could be some light flurries in central and North Jersey as soon as 2 or 3 p.m., there won’t be any accumulation until later Sunday.

“Northern counties such as Bergen, Passaic and Sussex won’t be seeing much snow until after sunset,” Priante said. Sunset in New Jersey on Sunday is about 5:13 p.m.

The National Weather Service, meanwhile, said in its Sunday morning forecast discussion that inland areas of South Jersey could get 2 to 3 inches of snow by 6 p.m. The Interstate 95 corridor might have 1 to 2 inches by then, according to the NWS.

Either way, the main event of the storm won’t be until Monday, though.

“It’s really going to be Monday — probably late morning to midday when the low (pressure system) starts to take over and we start getting those heavier bands of snow. Whatever falls tonight into tomorrow morning will be steady but light to moderate,” Priante said.

At the peak of the storm Monday, it’s conceivable that some areas could get as much as 3 inches of snow an hour if the heaviest bands of snow set up anywhere over New Jersey, according to Priante.

A winter storm warning will be in effect for all or part of 18 counties. Snow totals are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and coastal areas of Ocean County to as much as a foot-and-a-half of snow across a large swath of North Jersey. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph and moderate coastal flooding are in the forecast, too.
